Perhaps the most exciting news in the mobile phone world so far this year, it has been reported that Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC is currently in talks with Mark Zuckerberg to arrange a partnership between the two technology giants, with HTC currently working on Facebook branded handsets. The new handset is due to be launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) later in 2011.
Facebook is ever increasing in popularity, with over 500million users and growing, Facebook is the most powerful force on the web. It is not in the business of making mobile phone handsets; however Mark Zuckerberg will certainly recognise the importance of the growing popularity of using your mobile for the internet.
Smart phones are too increasing in popularity, with many people looking to sell my mobile phone and upgrade to more advance versions of mobile telecommunication. The days of using your phone to simply text and call friends are long gone and mobile phones are quickly becoming indispensable to the running of peoples everyday lives.
It makes sense then that Facebook should want to increase its revenue in this way. It is still uncertain what the design and features of the handset will be specifically, however it is thought that Matthew Papakipnos from Google Chrome made the deal with HTC along with Mark Zuckerberg, so it is likely that the phone will be run using Google's Android, though which version is still undisclosed, though an educated guess is that it will run on Gingerbread, currently being debuted on the Google Nexus S. Naturally, the phone will be prominently geared around social media, with updates and changes registered on the home screen and the opportunity to call friends using their Facebook data, along with all of the standard features of advanced mobile phones.
Whether merging mobile and social networking technology is another step towards a big brother society, or another natural growth in technological progression, you decide.
