If you like to run, then you will want to get yourself some suitable clothing and footwear. But is there anything to bear in mind before you start looking around different stores? Will a better choice of running accessories really make that much difference to your comfort and performance? And are there any actual benefits to spending money on more expensive items?

You can wear whatever you want to when you go out for a run, but if you choose a good quality pair of running shoes and some suitable clothes then it is certainly going to make the whole experience far more enjoyable. After all, you may be exercising when you go out for a jog, but you still want to be as comfortable as possible; and that means psychologically as well as physically.

The singularly most important part of your outfit will be your footwear. If you go out running in a pair of ill-fitting shoes then it is going to make your exercise feel twice as hard as it is. And the chances are you are going to end up with sore and blistered feet. This may sound like common sense stuff, but you would be surprised at just how many people do not wear the right sort of shoes when they go out for a jog.

Everyone has a slightly different way of running and it is important that you get yourself something suitable for your individual style. Shoes which have been specifically designed for running will give you support in all of the relevant places. They will normally focus around the mid-sole area and offer extra reinforcement and padding to the heel. If you remember that you hit the ground with two or three times your body weight when you are running then you will understand why it is crucial to wear the correct style of shoe.

There are several ways to determine the type of gait/foot strike you have when you run. A doctor or podiatrist will be able to tell you how your feet come into contact with the ground and what support to look for in a pair of shoes. You can also perform a ‘wet foot test' yourself, to discover which parts of your feet are taking most of the impact when you run.

Once you have chosen your footwear, you are going to want some well designed running clothes. There is only one really important thing to keep in mind when you are choosing these and that is the type of fabric. The golden rule is to get yourself clothing that is made from fast-wicking polyester. This is light to wear and it will help to keep you dry. Whether you want it to be tight or loose fitting is entirely down to you. Some people will choose snug fitting tights whilst others prefer to wear looser garments, such as leggings and a baggy t-shirt. It depends solely on what makes you feel the most comfortable and how confident you feel when showing off your physique.
