If you are interested in taking music classes you may have one question in mind: what am I going to learn? The last thing you want to do is take music classes, just to find that you are in the same place as when you started. What you learn depends on many factors.
How much do you already know? If you are a beginner you will take music classes that are much different than somebody who has been playing an instrument or singing for many years. Obviously, this is something that you want to discuss with your teacher and/or music school before you enroll. This way, you can get a better idea of what the music classes are going to teach you.
Part of a music teacher's job is to identify what the student already knows, as well as which areas need improvement. In other words, show up and do your best. From there, your teacher will take over and make an assessment on what you should be focusing on. As long as you are comfortable with the direction you are headed, nothing else matters.
Some students learn the basics, while others dive into more important details. This all depends on your experience, as well as what you are trying to accomplish. Make sure you are open and honest with your music teacher about your expectations before you get started.
There is no denying that students can learn a lot in music classes. What you learn, though, is based largely on your current standing. If you and your teacher are on the same page, you will definitely make progress from day one.
