In the UK, there are both NHS and private dentists; most people are registered with an NHS dentist but in some areas, there is a problem with access to NHS dental services and patients have chosen to register with a private dentist; some people also prefer to see a private dentist because they offer a wider range of services and there are usually shorter waiting lists.
NHS dentistry, unlike other NHS services, is not free of charge for most people; however, prices are considerably lower than private treatment and you can get free dental treatment if you are under the age of 18 or receiving benefits.
If you want to register with a dentist, you simply need to ring up and join the list; if the practice you want to join does not have any spare dental places, you can try other practices in the area or contact your local Primary Care Trust; they will be able to tell you which surgeries in your area are taking on new patients.
Many NHS trusts have invested a large amount of money in dental services after patient focus groups and surveys revealed that oral health was a major concern for a large proportion of people. Money has been invested to create new practices and expand the services of existing surgeries.
It is also worth bearing in mind that dental treatments available on the NHS are essential, not cosmetic. If you would prefer dental implants over dentures, then this private dentistry is the appropriate option.
