The language of Weather Vanes can be heard through the years of time and the pages of history.

The Tower of Winds in the ancient Roman town of Athens displayed a weather vane that was in the form of a Triton holding a rod in his outstretched hand. This wind vane spoke for the Roman Gladiators and to the people of Athens. The language is faint for this weather vane, but, can still be heard.

In the early 1800's, the Royal Navy's Admiralty building in London displayed a weather vane, which was attached mechanically to a wind indicator right in the boardroom. The naval officers had continual knowledge of wind direction while being in the boardroom. This weather vane spoke for all of the Royal Navy's personnel and to the residents of London during that time.

A Douglas DC-3, full sized airplane sits on top of a support in Whitehorse, Yukon. A wind of just 5 knots will cause this hugh weather vane to rotate. It is part of the Yukon Transportation museum, besides the Whitehorse International Airport. This weather vane speaks for pilots who still use it for wind direction. It speaks to tourists as a land mark, and it speaks to the local residents, who take pride in their wind plane.

Today weather vanes speak for and to millions of people, all over the world. When you display, for example, a dog, a horse, or a sailboat weather vane on your home or other building, it speaks to others on your behalf. Children, of all ages, are spoken to by the weather vane on their home or barn. A weather vane might be on the house or building of a relative, or neighbor. We look and feel different kinds of emotions as we watch the duck, goose, horse, or dog, up there, doing a rotating dance with the wind.
